Chito-ryu karate was introduced to the United States by William Dometrich, the head of the United States Chito-kai. William Dometrich was also the instructor for Sensei/Reverend Dan Francis, the founder of Louisville Dojo and Dr. Dipboye's first Karate teacher.
The Koshin-Ha Chito-ryu Karate organization was formed in 2004 by a coalition of intellectual leaders of US Chito-ryu practitioners and is dedicated to to studying, preserving and further developing the style of Chito-ryu karate-do as founded by Dr. Tsuyoshi Chitose. The name Koshin-ha translates as; (Ko)=Old, (Shin)=New, (ha)=group or family.
Koshin-ha thus describes the philosophy we have chosen to follow: we are a united group who have chosen to study the old ways, to better understand the new. In other words, we have chosen to study the methods as taught and passed on by our founder, Dr. Chotose in order to realize the maximum potential inherent in his teachings and their implications for future development.
This picture of Dr. Chitose was taken "on the rocks near Peggy's Cove" in Nova Scotia and is used with the generous permission by Sensei Michael Colling.
